I bought this book as it was highly recommended as "the" reference versus Faraday cages. The same subject is referenced right in the title as well.
Unfortunately the Faraday cages chapter seems to be the weakest chapter in the book. Technical details are replaced by a collection of ideas gathered from various places and merged together without a solid understanding on how they work. Also, the chapter is just 20 pages long (less than one fifth from the book) and doesn't provide any references.
The author doesn't present any details/specifications on how the Faraday cages should be built. It adds, however a great deal of subjective/personal opinions such as "I find the notion of building a box out of wood and then proceeding to cover it with aluminum foil absurd.". Part of the chapter is also devoted to a useless discussion on grounding (which, if done incorrectly is in best case useless or even dangerous).
I gave the book two stars as it provides some good contextual information re. Solar flares and EMP but I am still looking for a good technical reference in providing rules of thumb for designing good Faraday cages.

Very interesting reading. Enough technical information to wet the appetite but no so much as to become tedious, with important points covered and minimal fluff. The author discusses the sun, solar history, power grids, spacecraft and avionics, electronics, the human body, earthquakes, and EMP's. The attitude is calm, objective, and slightly funny. Scary. There is a huge orb in the sky that most people pay little attention to. I'm convinced. The final chapters on Faraday cage design and space weather info are excellent. This book give you the tools to stay abreast of conditions on the sun, and how to prepare for extreme solar storms and EMP's.

CLEARLY WRITTEN DESCRIPTIONS OF SOLAR EVENTS FOR THE NON SCIENTIST. VERY UNDERSTANDABLE. THE "HOW TO AVOID DAMAGE FROM EMP'S" WAS USEFUL AND EASILY ACCOMPLISHED BY INDIVIDUALS.
Very informative but would have benefited by adding information about the author. I suggest reading several sources, since the science has not been widely available in the media.
There is good deal of information on solar flares and the history of solar flares in the past couple of centuries since they have become an item of interest. There is some coverage of space craft and how they could be damaged. The national power grid and some of its history and why it is vulnerable and what can be done to reduce the vulnerability. There are some thought on our personnel electronic gear and what might be injured, which is about everything including our cars, computers, washing machines, refrigerators etc. EMP devices are addressed.
Some basic principles of Faraday Cages are addressed. Unfortunately, there is very little detail on how to build and employ Faraday cages.
I was hoping that there would be more details on Faraday Cages, and a few examples shown. How for example could one protect a refrigerator? Showing how to protect a bunch of small electronic devices would be useful, especially if the advice is practical.
This book might interest people who are unfamiliar with the issue of damage from solar flares and EMP devices and are looking for basic information on the problem and protection.
